Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple AirPort Express with Air Tunes M9470LL/A [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Works for me with a little work Summary: 5 Stars
I am a windows user and found the documentation a little lacking. There are many uses for this device but let me tell you how I am using it. I there wasn't really anything in the instructions for using it this way since everything seems geared toward being wireless.
Here's my setup.
I have a router with to desktop and a wireless router downstairs for roaming with a laptop. I have a whole house audio system in a closet. I decided to run an network cable from my router to the closet where the stereo equipment is. I plugged the airport express in and it automatically made a connection on the network. Using the configuration utility I looked through all the different settings and I believe on the last tab there was a setting for allowing ethernet connections or something to that effect. Now I installed itunes on all 3 computers. On one of the desktop pc's I loaded all my cd's into itunes and selected to share them with others on the network and also check the box for search for remote speakers. The cool thing is that there is a button on the itunes where I can select the airport express as the output. Now no matter what computer I'm on I can play my cd collection through the house speakers very simply. The combination of itunes and the airport express work flawlessly. I'm very impress with how quick the songs start up even over the network. The only thing I can't comment on is it's ability over wireless since I chose to wire mine. It's definately worth it.
Customer Review: it really just works! Summary: 5 Stars
I had been trying to get a network print server for our Macintosh 802.11b network, but it was hard to get a straight answer on which would work and which would not. I had tried a D-Link wireless print server, but it turns out that it only works with Postscript printers with Macs. This is hidden in the fine print of the manual. Then I contacted Axis, because the fine print in their manual IMPLIED that non-Postscript printers were supported, but their customer support denied this in an email.
So, I went with Apple for an extra $30 or so. I plugged in the printer USB cable and shoved the Airport Express into the wall. About a minute later a strange network showed up on my Airport pulldown menu. I installed the software on the CD that came with it and my Panther based system had me up and printing in minutes.
Then, I went over to one of the other Macs running Jaguar. Apple implies you really need Panther, or at least 10.2.8, to use the Airport Express, but I pulled out the Rendezvous printers menu and IT JUST WORKED. Totally amazing.
Now, I've noticed that I've got a little pull down tab in iTunes, so I suppose I can listen to music while my printer thrashes. There's also an option for extending my Airport network range, but we're pretty extended here as it is. So, I bought the Swiss Army knife of the 802.11b world. Right now I'm just using the corkscrew, but it's nice to know it has lots of extra blades, AND IT JUST WORKS.
Customer Review: Flawless setup, wireless printing, and music anywhere Summary: 5 Stars
The Airport Express is an amazing product. For a little more money than your standard wireless router, you get a lot more. First, it is important to point out that the Airport Express works whether you have a Mac, Windows based machine, or both. There is no compatibility concerns to worry about.
First, wireless networking. The Airport Express does everything you could wish for, when it comes to creating a wireless network. It supports full WPA encryption, and it has all the settings and customization that you would expect, from such a product.
Wireless printing. No matter what computer you're on, you don't have to worry about the computer that is connected to the printer being on and being plugged into the printer. You can print from your notebook computer in the living room to the printer connected to the airport express, via USB, in your office. Perfect!
Air Tunes, stream music from iTunes to the output on the Airport Express. Connect the output to a stereo, or speakers. Enjoy the tunes.
Size. The Airport Express is very small, for it fits in your hand. You can pack it in your suitcase, when you're at a hotel with high speed net, plug the hotel's ethernet into your airport express, and you have your wireless network in your hotel room!
Overall, if some or all of these features interest you, pick up the Airport Express!
Customer Review: Great Router, Easy Setup, Excellent product Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the Airport Express with my iMAC G5 system, which has an Airport card installed inside. The connectivity between the computer and the express base station is phenomenal. Right out of the box this is easy to setup. You insert the disc into your computer, install Airport Setup Assistant and the program intuitively directs you through the setup process. I was able to set up my home network in 15 minutes as opposed to the six months that passed before I was able to correctly configure my Linksys Wireless G Network card(a good product nevertheless). The base station allows you to share your iTunes collection among all the computers in your home assuming the computer with your main library is turned on, your airport express is working properly, and iTunes is running on your two computers(or more). It is very easy to listen to my 14GB music library on my Mac, upstairs wirelessly on a Dell Precision M90 laptop which, as you might have guessed, runs Windows. But I never have any problems with the connectivity between the two of them. Airport works well with Windows and comes with a Windows disc. Airport also allows you to share a printer, among other things. If you are not worried about having a super fast internet connection, buy the current Airport express which does provide high speed internet at 802.11g. The new airport(another product) provides a high speed connection at 802.11i.
Customer Review: Works perfectly with PCs and MACs and Canon ip5000 Summary: 5 Stars
I love this unit, it is technology at its best. Wireless internet, music, and printing all from one simple device. We have a mixed environment, a PC with 802.11b and a MAC with 802.11g. They both work perfectly. The printer is outstanding, if you connect it directly to your computer before plugging it into the Airport Express, you can configure the power-management features. You only have to do this once, and it allows you to configure the printer to auto power-off and auto power-on. In other words, it stays off until you print something and shuts itself off after 5 minutes. Canon got it right with the PM features and I am so glad it works over the Airport Express--no more dried out cartridges.
The only problems I have experienced with the AE unit, is that it froze once in 4 months--just unplug to restart--we always leave it on. Frequently if we close the lid on the MAC, iTunes won't be able to play to the speakers and you have to select the computer speakers and then select the AE speakers. Not a big deal, but annoying sometimes. Also the range is pretty bad. I think they forgot to install an antenna in the unit. It will go 2 rooms max, across a house is not possible unless you put it right in the middle of a smaller sized house. Even with these few problems, it is an amazing piece of hardware, I can give it no less than 5 stars.
