Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Antennas Direct ClearStream4 HDTV AntennaCustomer Review: Delighted Summary: 5 Stars
This antenna exceeded my wildest expections.
I have moved from New Hampshire to a place about 40 miles northwest of Orlando. When I ordered the antenna, I thought I'd have a good chance of picking up some of the stations from that city. However, while waiting for delivery, I checked further, and found that the antennas for the TV stations in Orlando are about 60 miles away. Given that I planned to mount the antenna in my attic, I no longer was optimistic--the antenna is supposed to be good for up to 65 miles, but with the 10-15 miles you lose mounting in the attic, I thought I'd be outside the range in which it would work. Then, on top of that, I realized that I'd be pointing the antenna right down the street I live on; so the signal would not have to go through only my roof, but the roof of the 12 or so houses that are between my house and the broadcast antennas. So even before the antenna arrived, I was mentally preparing myself to return it.
When the antenna came, I spent quite a while trying to get it to work by my TV. I was able to get only a few stations, and those were from places other than Orlando. Then I got a friend to help me and took the antenna up to the attic while he stayed in front of the TV and watched the signal strength meter on the TV. To make a long story short, we found one precise location where I was able to get EVERY station from Orlando with perfect clarity. I get 10 digital channels, and each of them has 2-5 subchannels, so I get about 25 stations with this antenna--all with perfect picture.
Some cautions:
1. This antenna is designed for digital signals only. The best picture I got from an analog signal was quite weak and snowy. But after Feb. 17, digital is all you're going to get anyway, and this antenna is tremendous at picking them up.
2. The instructions to put it together aren't the best I've seen, and the pictures that came with the instructions weren't clear enough to see details. As a result, it took at bit of trial and error to finally put the antenna together correctly. But the whole process only took 15 minutes or so (I think if you knew what you were doing, it would take less than 5).
3. When you're operating from a fringe area like I am, the precise placement of the antenna is critical. Just changing the aim by a few degrees or changing the location by a few inches made a world of difference, so if you are in a marginal situation like me, you'll need (1) a helper, and (2) some indication of signal strength (fortunately, there is one built into my TV).
But when it's all said and done, this antenna really does a tremendous job of gathering signals. I just can't believe the quality and quantity of the signals I'm receiving from this rather modest-sized antenna (I have very limited space in my attic, and the antenna fit easily), given how far away the stations are and all the housing material the signal has to go through to get to my antenna.
