Customer Review: Nifty, inexpensive, long-wave (400nm) UV flashlight

I bought this item ostensibly to find pet stains and the like, but I really just wanted one of these to play with.
It is a longer wavelength UV LED flashlight than some, which means the potential for damaging your eyes is lower (cataracts), and also that it will be better at detecting proteins and other organic sources (or so I have read). It does find stains, and works best with the room darkened as much as possible. The rug under our weight machine is a favorite for vomiting cats, and boy does it show with this thing aimed at it! The rug appears perfectly clean under normal light, but looks like a crime scene under UV.
You can tell when the flashlight is turned on, as 400nm is within the range of human eyesight. And if you look right into it (not recommended) it seems somewhat bright. But aim it at something that fluoresces like a white piece of paper and the purple glow will be much brighter. Pretty much like black lights used for posters.
Build quality is what you might expect for an inexpensive flashlight: not really waterproof, thin anodizing, not made of the most durable aluminum on earth, but it is very compact and gets the job done. I wish it had been designed to use a single C cell rather than three AAA cells, but for some reason no one manufactures single C LED flashlight of any kind - and who really cares in a product like this that will only be used now and then. The power switch is in the end and works well. The lanyard is cheap and too small for real use.
Overall, I'm happy with this purchase, it's a great little toy to have around.
