Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable (6.5 Feet/2.0 Meters)[Supports 3D + Audio Return Channel][OLD MODEL]Customer Review: Best cable on the market Summary: 5 Stars
Any high speed digital cable is a network of resistance, inductance, and capacitance. A simple length of copper wire introduces both resistance and inductance. Resistance converts some of the voltage into a small amount of heat. Inductance resists a change in current by varying the voltage, which distorts the signal. To compensate for inductance, a small amount of capacitance is introduced by twisting the signal wire together with a ground wire. Capacitance to ground resists a change in voltage by varying current. The dielectric constant and thickness of the insulating material, along with the number of twists govern the amount of capacitance introduced to the network. This network of resistance, inductance, and capacitance combines to form impedance, measured in ohms, for a given frequency. To insure the maximum amount of energy transferred, the source, receiver, and cable must all be designed to operate at a given impedance at the selected frequency. If there is a mis-match in impedance, energy will be reflected or diverted which causes signal distortion and attenuation.
Connectors play an important part as well. High frequencies found on an HDMI cable must not be introduced to sharp bends such as right-angles. The contacts on the connector must be properly spaced and formed within a non-conducting material to preserve the proper impedance while providing isolation between signal lines. Gold contacts are best provided that the receiver uses gold contacts as well as the cable. Different metals in contact with each other on the connector, such as silver vs. gold or tin vs. silver causes electrolysis by the same process found in a battery. Over time, corrosion will occur and the signal will degrade. In extreme cases, oxidation will build up between the different metals to permanently fuse the connector and the cable, but this destructive process often takes years to manifest itself.
Specifications are written to govern the manufacturing process of cables, such as HDMI 1.3 or CAT5 and CAT6 for Ethernet cables. HDMI 1.4 was just recently introduced to allow an Ethernet signal to travel along the cable as well. Full HD 1080p requires the highest frequencies for its operation. Higher frequencies are the most susceptible to poor manufacturing methods i.e. you can use a cheaper cable for 720p which may not work as well with 1080p.
This being said, these Amazon.com HDMI cables are providing a crisp signal for me at 1080i. I don't have a 1080p source to test but I'm sure they'll be fine. These cables are made made to the same specifications as those found in retail stores costing ten times more. While a good HDMI cable is essential for proper HDTV operation, you cannot go wrong with these excellent cables. They are backed by a full year warranty. Stock up, buy a few extras.
