I was hesitant to buy the cover for my Kindle DX when I read the amount of poor reviews. I am not sure why anyone would rate this cover only one star. So I ordered the cover (with intentions of returning it if it didn't work), but now that I have seen it for myself in person I love it! The Kindle DX clips into the covers hinge and the magnetic cover keeps the Kindle DX from slipping while I read it. I like to fold over the front flap cover so I can read with one hand when I'm sitting or lying in bed... a great feature that I never could do with a real book or I would bend up the cover and ruin the books spine. The cover is lightweight so it doesn't add a lot of bulk to the Kindle DX and you can tell the cover is really durable and you'll never have to worry about the screen getting scratched or damaged.
My advice is ignore the 1 star comments and see the cover for yourself. Yes, it's a shame that it cost $50, but there really aren't any cheaper alternatives. I would love a designer Cole Haan cover once they come out, but I bet they will be triple the cost and this cover is working out just great!

This item is excellent to protect your DX. It's durable, yet thin, and well made. I use it to prop up my DX in the horizontal format and set the front cover behind the DX at an angle so that reading is easier during my morning breakfast newspaper reading and it allows me to keep it further away from the "splash zone" when you are enjoying your morning cereal. I plant a heavy book behind it to keep the cover flap from slipping and use it like an easel. I read other reviews before buying this item and they were questioning the quality of the leather. I disagree with their negative assessment. Also, the metal connection hardware works well and contributes to it's thin profile. I also like the fact that the front cover folds over flat and behind the DX easily so you can read it like a DX without a cover. I do agree with a former reviewer, that, you have to be somewhat careful when you open the cover that you don't accidentally try to open the back cover from the DX. I did it once and it didn't break, but, I could see it happening.Customer Review: Try it, you'll like it

I place a high value on the user comments from Amazon on a great variety of products I have purchased from them and others, and admire their courage to share even the bad reviews. I just now received the cover for my new Kindle DX and am more than pleased. It is perfect from my perspective-does what I want it to do, cover and protect as well as dress up the electronic box, all at a decent price. I can't figure out the basis for the negative reviews as I find it to be apparently well made, using good materials and very clever in design (as small and unobtrusive as possible). Obviously having just received it I can't comment on durability but at this stage I see no reason not to have high expectations on that score. I also bought the light for it which seems to be a pretty good idea. My suggestion for improvement would be to integrate the light into the cover, or better yet, to offer a cover either with or without the light built in.Customer Review: Wraps the DX in fine leather.

This cover is a must if you buy a DX. The DX just snaps right into it -- a perfect fit. The cover looks great when you carry it places too. It almost appears to be a slim paper organizer. The classy faceplate, "AmazonKindle", gives away the secret though.
Inside, you will find a soft felt material which wraps around the DX. I think the felt actually cleans the screen when the cover is closed. There is a rail with a hook and another piece along the binding that snap into the DX. Once the DX is in, it isn't falling out without a whole lot of force. It is very snug and very secure.
The DX cover has two small magnetic strips that help keep it closed when you're on the move.
This cover is expensive...but for the protection and security it provides, the style it highlights, and those magnetic strips that help keep the cover closed, it is worth the money. Get one. Your DX will thank you.

I got my first generation Kindle DX back when it was $550 (or around that much). I got it for Christmas in 2009, and I got this cover with it. At the time, it was the only cover that locked into the Kindle DX. I've seen the reviews about it damaging the Kindle, but this has not been true for me. A year later and my Kindle DX is still in pristine condition, and I haven't taken the cover this whole time. The case its self has gotten discoloration on the outside of it, but is otherwise also in pristine condition. It's gone through airport security at least twice, I tote it to my classes in my backpack stuffed with my textbooks, and it's held up through everything I put it through. My only complaint is that I recently bought stickers to pretty-up my Kindle, and can't get it out of the case to put the stickers on. I remember I had to really squeeze the hooks to get the Kindle in it.
