Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Amazon Kindle DX Black Leather Cover (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest and 2nd Generation Kindles)Customer Review: William K. in North Carolina Summary: 5 Stars
I knew I wanted a cover to protect my new Kindle screen. I selected the DX Leather Cover because I assumed it would provide the best protection because it was made specifically for the Kindle, and also because it was the most costly. I didn't want to spend as much as it cost ($49.99), but assumed it would be worth the cost. I was really surprised at how great the quality of this cover is! The leather looks great, feels great (doesn't feel like a plastic cover), is well stitched all the way around both sides of the cover. No over-stitching, no missed stitch areas. It's perfect! The inside of the cover is finished with a felt type of material that lays perfectly against the leather cover. The Kindle is held in place through a unique pair of fasteners on the inside spine that securely hold the Kindle. The Kindle is held against the back cover with magnets that are imbedded in the edges of t he cover that are attracted to the Kindle back. The front cover is also held in place with the same-type magnet device. You won't have to worry about the cover opening while it's in your brief case of backpack, and allowing something to get against the screen and scratch the Kindle. It's easy enough to open the cover, but not too easy. You can also flip the front cover all the way around to the back of the Kindle. The back cover edges line up perfectly with the front cover edges! You don't have to worry about the edges of the cover wearing out unevenly. It's a really high quality product, one of the best functionally designed products I've ever used.
The only drawback (and this is a user issue, not a product issue), I sometimes slip my fingers between the Kindle and the back cover instead of the front cover when I'm opening it. The cover's never been damaged, as I realize what I've done before I've opened it more than an inch or two. The hinge was made to allow for such accidental use up to (I would guess) at least three inches, so it would be really hard to damage the unit (almost intentional).
If you want a pleasant surprise, buy this unit and enjoy its functionality as much as the Kindle it protects. I've had my Kindle for about a month. Love it!!!
Customer Review: Christmas gift that lasts... Summary: 5 Stars
We were on an airplane when my wife overheard a conversation and spied an e-book reader - a Kindle. She always brings several books on our trips away - loves to read. "Would you consider something like that" I asked? "Yes", came the reply,"maybe for Christmas". I was delighted, she desires very little - great to find something she wanted. I set to work researching e-book readers. I have a Sony e-book that has already taken a trip back to the factory under warranty and is about to take another. While it has many positive attributes, it has disappointed on realiability and durability.
I researched several e-books - availability in time for Christmas was a critical variable. Both the standard and the DX Kindle could be delivered by the holiday. I knew the "standard size" from my Sony so I went to Borders and found a book of comparable size and weight to the DX. Pretty hefty price tag, plus the extended warranty and a cover ~$750 - whew! But I thought about how she uses books, the page size that more resembled the size of the books she typically reads, the ability to scaling the text and graphics, its flexibility, and went forward. Here's the result.
She loves it. We had a vacation in the "sun" for a couple of weeks in January. Sitting by the pool or the beach in full sun or under the umbrella - very readable. Downloading books - intuitive and a snap. The wireless capability to download from anywhere, while nice, is not used as much as downloading while attached to her laptop. Book selection is great. Love's the "free" books. This keeps her returning to the Kindle site often, just to see what's available. She love's it. When we travel it's outstanding, but now she has started to use it at home. The investment was worth every penny. Try it. You will not be disappointed.Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device (9.7" Display, U.S. Wireless)
Customer Review: The best cover for Kindle DX. Summary: 5 Stars
After reading many reviews of the Patagoina case and the Amazon leather cover, I started with the Patagonia case. As others have mentioned, the Kindle does fit, very snugly, after muscling the corners in under the elastic straps (while holding your breath, hoping not to crack the Kindle's case). Once in, the Kindle certainly isn't going anywhere. The problem I had with that case was that the apparent risk of repeatedly removing and installing the Kindle in the Patagoina case realistically meant you are stuck reading the Kindle while in the case. It's doable, but not as satisfying as holding the Kindle alone or using it along with the Amazon cover.
The Amazon leather cover is beautifully designed and constructed. The outer leather has nice texture and that "real leather" smell. The inner surface is similar to felt, and both protects the Kindle and makes a good surface to hold onto when reading with the cover folded back. The cover is perfectly matched to the shape of the Kindle, so all of the edges are flush.
Regarding the comments about possible damage to the Kindle from opening the cover "upside down," just don't do it! It's really easy to tell which side is up, especially with the Kindle logo on the front of the cover. The attachment mechanism works very well. It is easy to install the Kindle on the attachment hooks, and the setup holds the Kindle firmly in place.
One thing I did decide to do, just to add extra (probably unneeded) protection while the Kindle with cover are in my backpack or briefcase, was to add a neoprene netbook computer sleeve. I chose the Case Logic 13.3" sleeve, as the 7-10" netbook sleeves I tried in a local store fit, but just barely. The 12" or 13" sleeves are not overly large, and easily hold the Kindle with the leather cover in place.

Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device (9.7" Display, U.S. Wireless, Latest Generation)Amazon Kindle DX Leather Cover (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX)
I have used with satisfaction a Kindle Reader (First Generation) for several years and was about to move up to the newer Kindle Reader 2, when I saw the KindleDX had just become offered. I researched the new DX as much as possible, then decided to at least try it.
The KindleDX is a smash success! Effortless to use, a delight with which to read the daily New York Times or any standard or illustrated electronic book or magazine. Huge stowage space, effortless purchasing and fast download process. Screen size and font size choice are wonderful for anyone, but a must for older eyes like mine.
Controls and menues are easy, obvious and a pleasure to use, and the speed of response is just right, neither too quick nor too slow. The variety of special features such as dictionary look up, notes, underlining, clipping, bookmarking, etc. are easy to use and universally appropriate.
The 5 way switch is the perfect answer for a primary control and having the 'next' and 'previous' and 'home' buttons on the right side is, for me at least, the best arrangement.
I have been a machine design engineer all my working career and I extend my heartiest congratulations to the designers who assembled the KindleDX! I can find nothing I could add or change that would have been any better than that which is provided!
Customer Review: Essential cover works well with Kindle DX International for AUSTRALIA - Reccomendation: STRONG BUY Summary: 5 Stars
Glad I purchased this cover. Was undecided as there are SO many covers available - which to choose??
I went with the Amazon Kindle cover. Initially I thought I would just buy this to start and then upgrade to another but now, why bother? It works really well, looks fine and protects the Kindle.
The product snaps around the Kindle - just be a little careful attaching the Kindle and it works and looks good.
An absolute MUST HAVE for any Australian or Kindle user.
SERVICE Experience:
The first version I bought (mid feb 2010) arrived and the front cover was warped. Very strange. So after a flurry of emails I found the best way to contact Amazon from Australia.
1. Click http://www.amazon.com/kindlesupport
2. On the right hand side look for the box "Get Express customer service or contact us by e-mail or phone" - click CONTACT US
3. There is a phone option. Simply enter your Australian number and within seconds Amazon will call you for free (note: they cannot call any mobile numbers - has to be a landline)
Amazon promptly sent me a replacement cover and charged me for this. However, sending stuff back to Amazon from Australia is not easy!
(mid-March 2010) still no clear return instructions or refund.
