Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Altec Lansing VS2620 Speakers for Computers and MP3 Players (Black)Customer Review: Low end market, high quality speakers Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Out of the box, I was surprised how these speakers looked. I totally forgot about the 3-inch speaker and it has 2 on each speakers. So by looking at the pictures, you wouldn't expect these speakers to be almost 10 inches high. This set is marketed as low end speakers but the materials used, look and feel, and over all appearance of the speaker is not. The silver sort of frame is made of plastic with matte finish while the bottom, side and back are also plastic with a black glossy finish giving the speakers a high class look. The bottom part also has rubber footings so every detail was given to this set. As I've mentioned above, the speakers are 3-inches in diameter and you got 2 of them vertically on each speaker. There are knobs (switches) which are made of rubber and are all in front of one of the speakers. Beside the knobs is an auxilliary port so you could plug in other components while this speaker is plugged in to another. Knobs are for power, volume, and tone. All knobs felt solid when turned as well as the whole speaker system. Both speakers are wired to each other, no way you could separate them. There is a power adaptor included that powers the system.
What I like about the speakers are:
1) Build quality. Solidly built, none of its parts felt cheap. They weigh quite a bit so that is 1 proof of its high quality build. Black gloss finish all over exceot for the silver frame giving it a classy look.
2) Knobs are made of rubber and not plastic. Easy to turn and they are located in front rather than the back.
3) Extra auxilliary port and it is also located in front.
4) There are four 3-inch speakers that you can see through the black mesh cloth covering it. Definitely a classic look.
What I don't like are:
1) Power knob is separate from the volume knob. I got used to a power knob that is also the volume control for the speakers unless the power knob is a swtich or a button. But more often than not, a knob-type switch is also the volume control. So I always tend to turn the power knob a little bit more and then realizing it will not control the volume.
2) Only one knob to control the sound. I would prefer 2 more extra controls for bass and treble but it only has a dedicated 'tone' knob. This knob will control the sound you are listening to by making it sound lower or higher. It's basically the treble control, based from the sound difference I hear when turning it. So in a way, there is no bass control.
3) Bass is ok, my head phones are way better. I couldn't feel any bass from the speakers until I crank the volume to high. I'm not sure if it is supposed to behave this way.
4) Power adaptor is only 120v. I was hoping it to be auto-volt.
For a laptop/computer, this is a nice set of speakers. Sound is rich, crisp, and clear. There is also an effect that you're listening to a surround sound set-up. Although as I've mentioned above, I didn't feel there is enough bass, at least on the unit I got. I tried listening to a song that has some heavy drums and beats using my headphones and speakers and I barely heard the beats in the speakers not until I turn the volume way up which is too loud already. I wished they had a seprate control for bass that could fix the weak bass I've experienced.
I also tried watching a movie as well and everything is so clear, you could hear the sounds coming from the left and right. Voices were so clear and the sounds from the background are not blending in with the dialogue unlike what I've experienced on another set and with the laptop's built-in speakers.
Overall, for a low-end set of speakers, this will definitely be above the other low-end speakers in the market. A+ on build and sound but only B+ on performance due to the bass output. Still 5 stars though, overall. It will depend on the user how much bass they want.
