Customer Review: Great Little System for the Condo - (REVIEW IS BASED ON USING IT AS AN IPHONE DOCK - NOT AN IPOD DOCK)

Note ** I'm reviewing this as an IPHONE dock not an IPOD dock.
The wife had been wanting a speaker dock for her iphone for over a year now, and I decided to get her one as part of her Christmas present this year. I ended up spending a month researching different docks, and what threw me off initially was trying to find one that was designed specifically for the Iphone. Early on I thought I had found the perfect dock and almost purchased it but at the last minute I decided to re-read some reviews and opinions and discovered that the dock had some problems playing the Iphone due to interference if the phone wasn't set in Airplane mode. As well some people claimed that they could still hear audio interference when the phone was set in Airplane mode. This ended up changing everything and with luck I "stumbled" upon the Altec Lansing T612 Speaker dock. After a bit "more" research and from other reviews I ended up purchasing it through Amazon.com and having it shipped to Canada.
Christmas morning she opened it up and I wanted to get it out of the box immediatly because I hadn't been able to test the system anywhere before. The following is a breakdown of my rating:
Ease of Use:
Right out of the box, this was very simple to setup. Basically plug the AC adaptor into the wall and then run the power cable from the AC to the dock. Done! The only extra step that I took and FULLY RECOMMEND to any IPHONE user is to pull out the guard on which the IPHONE attaches to the dock. Thankfully I had read other peoples comments on this and it saved ruining the Iphone's connector trying to jam it into the dock. Once the Iphone was connected it immediatly switched to music mode and began playing. The wife wanted to set it up in the bedroom where she wanted to use it the most, and had it up and running in 2 minutes flat and loves how easy it is to use. There are only a couple of buttons on top (Power, Volume, Bass, Treble,) and the unit comes with a remote which she enjoys using to switch between songs. 5 Stars
Construction Quality:
Had the dock shipped to Canada and was worried if it would survive the trip, as I have heard some peoples horror stories. Not the case here. When I took it out of the box I was surprised at how sturdy it was. It is a solid unit that feels well built. Out of the Box 5 Stars, however that might change if it ends up hitting the floor a couple times down the road.
Sound Quality:
I was worried when I purchased this as I hadn't been able to test the system before hand. The closest I could come to hearing what the speaker system sounded like was by viewing a couple of YouTube clips which is obviously not the wisest way to base a decision on. The first thing I did when it was set up was to crank it up and see how it sounded, and I was amazed at the sound quality coming out of this dock. The first comment from the wife was how amazing it sounded. An audiophile might find fault but I was more then pleased with the full sound. I had the volume set to about the half way point, and it was more than enough sound for our entire condo. For the price, and what she wanted it for, I have to give it 5 stars. I know the minute you start pushing the device to its limits you will end up noticing a few flaws in the souond quality but that is to be expected. However for our place, we will never need to push it that far. I was worried that even though it claimed to be made specifically for the iphone to prevent audio interference that there might still be some present, like a slight ticking sound. No worries here, the Altec Lansing T612 does what it claims to do, so dont let that worry you! 5/5 (for the condo)
Features:
There are not too many features on this unit. Obviously you have the Bass and Treble buttons but other then that there are no other options for tweaking the unit. For some (like my wife) this is a huge plus, for others this might turn you off. The best feature which I tested right away was the incoming call feature. If you are listening to music and suddenly someone calls you, the phone will turn off your music and allow you to answer your phone. The minute you plug it back in the music picks up from the exact point that it stopped playing, without you having to select anything. The only complaint I have about this, is that you have to take the phone off the dock in order to talk to the person, or switch the IPHONE into speaker phone mode. It would have been nice to have a speaker phone feature built in but its not a huge concern. Again the other great feature as an IPHONE dock is allowing you to have the phone in its regular mode without worrying about audio interference and distortion. (HUGE PLUS IN MY BOOKS). Also the system WILL charge your Iphone while its playing, and you can have it setup like a giant alarm clock which is also a nice feature. The system does exactly what it claims to do, and that is why I gave it 4/5 stars. There are not a lot of audio tweaking features, however it never claims to be able to do this. It is what it is, and what it does it does well. Again i would love to see a speaker phone setup in the unit so you didnt have to unplug the phone to talk, but thats just a minor complaint.
Value For Money:
For what the system does, and for the sound quality, I would say it is a great value for the price. (Again this was purchased to be used with an IPHONE and not an IPOD). If you wanted something with more sound and abilities I'm sure you would be looking at a different dock, however if you are wanting something for a smaller room (bedroom or a condo living room) and you are using it with an IPHONE and at a great price. Look no further. 5/5
Appearance:
The first thing my wife said when she took it out of the box was, "It looks so cute, and its sleek, I love it". Thats a 5/5 in my books. Its a solid black unit with silver trimming and a few blue led lights to show that its on. It is plain looking and it doesn't have a bunch of flashy lights, but I think it looks great. You can also send away for a free wall mount, which is another nice option if you didnt want it sitting on a shelf or something.
All in all.
Very pleased with this purchase, and I would recommend it to anyone looking at getting a speaker dock for there Iphone. Again I can't say how good it would be for someone with an IPOD, and I have read some reviews from people who were really disappointed with it solely for this reason. My wife loves the thing which is always a plus in my books. I was surprised at the sound quality, and the it does exactly what it claims to do. For that reason I would highly recommend it. I hope this helps!
Also a quick note to Canadians. I could only find the unit on 2 websites in Canada and both listed this product over $200 without tax. I bought it on sale here for $119US (If i waited another day I could have gotten it for 84.00, but I jumped the gun to early!) and with shipping and the import fee which Amazon figures out for you, I ended up getting the unit for around $175 canadian when it was all said and done. I know some people worry about additional fees but I didn't recieve any just make sure you select the standard shipping so it goes through DHL and Canada Post. I received the unit within the week that I ordered it as well which was amazing. Just some food for thought
