Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Altec Lansing M604 Powered Audio System for Zune

Customer Review: Great Quality Portable System
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought 2 of these items, one for me and one for my girlfriend. Altec Lansing has been high on my list for good quality sound since they pretty much started releasing speaker systems.

The sound quality is great on these little boxes. They are easily portable (they do plug into the wall of course) and give off pretty good sound for a smaller looking box.

The remote is nice as well. When you get ready for bed, you can pop your zune right into the cradle, it charges all night.

Advantages are.
Good sound.
Remote control.
Box also works with ipod or any mp3 player through the stereo cable plug in, (has a separate cradle for non zune devices).
Has adjustable bass and treble (which you can change at the box or with remote).

Negatives:
None really, I saw some peoples reviews and they complained about how the remote doesn't allow the option of changing artists on the zune (you can switch to the next song of course)... But thats incredibly stupid because even if you could, how would you know what artists you are picking standing 20 feet away from the zune screen. Not to mention if like me you have over 200 different artists on your zune. Really now? Maybe if the remote had a screen on it, but give me a break, no player has that for any mp3 device except the device itself. Thats what play lists are for people.

Anyhow, my girlfriend and I are incredibly happy with our new zune playing speaker systems. Altec Lansing is the way to go in sound if you are looking for something reasonably priced yet still fantastic in sound.

Customer Review: "finiky" complaint not really accurate
Summary: 5 Stars

I got these speakers for thirty five dollars from w00t with a coupon and they are fantastic! Some of the other, even positive, reviews suggest that you have to unplug the speakers to get it to connect with the zune. Not true! You do have to power off (not just standby) your zune first before turning on the speakers to make the connection. Here are the steps:

1) Turn off speakers using power button on the remote or the speakers.
2) Disconnect zune. Turn zune off by pressing *both* the down button on the circle and the back button (<--). This turns it off instead of merely standby.
3) Plug in zune into speakers.
4) BEFORE the zune is fully loaded (it has that progress line on the bottom) turn on the speakers. The speakers will make a connection with the zune and you are off to the races.

Simple and as you can see, no need to unplug the speakers.

Plus the remote works better for me. All the buttons work -- forward, back, play, pause, power, and volume. True, you cannot manipulate the menu, but as others have pointed out, from far away you cannot see the menu anyways! So, you are going to have to be near the zune anyways.

With wireless sync the setup is even better. Just leave it in and sync over your wireless internet to the computer. Perfect!

Five stars! The speakers sound fantastic and for the price I got a pretty slick deal. I think I have to thank some of the negative/positive reviewers who complained too much, they really helped keep the price down!

Customer Review: Good sound for the size and price!
Summary: 5 Stars

I received this for Christmas, and I've been quite pleased with it. The sound is nice and clear. And the bass is pretty nice considering there's no amp or subwoofer. I read a complaint about the music distorting a little when played at high volume. This is true, but I just adjust the settings depending on where and how loud I need to listen to it. That works great, and the sound is always clear and full no matter where I am in the room. My coworkers like it to.

I also read about someone having problems with the Zune not working until you unplug this and turn on that in a certain order. That's only partly true. All I have to do is turn the speakers on and off again. And it works fine. No need to unplug things and do a little dance to make it work.

Another cool thing is that I could plug an RCA video cable into the doc and a TV, then hook it up to my stereo receiver(via RCA/3.5 mm jack y/cord) through the headphone output on the back and watch my videos on a big screen with even better sound. Plus, my girlfriend plugged her MP3 player in using the AUX input and it sounds no different than my Zune. It just won't charge other MP3 players.

And I love being able to charge my Zune while listening to it on shuffle for hours.

A battery option would have been nice, but I have no complaints. Compared to some of the stereos that I've had in the past that cost the same, this sounds way better than any of them. And with a huge music library, FM radio and video player attached to it, it's way more enjoyable.

Customer Review: The perfect companion for your Zune!
Summary: 5 Stars

After being rather disappointed with the other Zune accessories offered by Microsoft (especially the terrible FM transmitter), I was a little hesitant about buying anything else for my Zune. But I have to say I am very glad I ended up with the Altec Lansing M604. The sound is fantastic out of these unassuming speakers. The Zune hooks up nicely to the front cradle, but I have to admit sticking it on there somewhat blindly made me nervous.

The remote is a great addition as well. Upon receiving this set-up, I was a little confused as to why people are complaining that you cannot navigate the Zune menus using the remote. If you were using the remote, I'd assume that you are far away from the player-- so if you COULD navigate the menus, how would you see what you are doing? Seems kind of pointless to me. If you are going to be that close to be able to read what you are doing, you may as well extend your arm and use the Zune's navigation buttons.

The one thing that would improve the product is a battery pack of some kind, so you could use the speakers without having to plug them in.

Overall this is a fantastic accessory for any Zune user.

Customer Review: Excellent sound, and it makes the coolest night light on earth!
Summary: 5 Stars

Uh huh. I leave my Zune shuffling on the m604 dock all night with the sound off and it keeps the screen lit, changing from image to image. Could there be a cooler night light? But I digress...

This unit has wonderful sound. I could believe that the musicians are in the next room sometimes. At VERY high volumes I get a little buzz, but if you just want full gorgeous sound for one room of your house, this is the way to go. It charges the Zune and has a handy remote, and looks elegant.

If you're trying to decide between this and the im414, there's no contest. I've listened to both, and the sound of the im414 can't even begin to compare with the sound of the m604. I was disappointed that the m604 doesn't work on batteries, but it's a little big to carry around with you anyway. (If you're looking for a great portable unit for your Zune, check out the JBL OnTour - no dock but it's small and sounds great). I use the m604 with my red Zune 80 - yes, it does fit; you just have to remove the little plastic insert.
