Customer Review: Amazing budget wifi adapter with more power than you can shake an anolog stick at!

For ~$40 you are getting a great deal. I didn't bother using the included CD I simply googled the model number and got the latest drivers from the manufacturers website. A great advantage to this, other than being up to date, is that they offer both an advanced version and "basic" version of the drivers/application. The basic driver set is no thrills and has only the most basic and simple of options and features available. Perfect for the layman or anyone that doesn't understand wireless networking technologies.
I use the advanced version of the driver/software. While the UI is poorly made its functionality is great. I discovered a bug or two but nothing that would deter me from the actual product. Plus, bugs and all, its MUCH better than using the basic driver set. It allows m e to control transmit power as well as other parameters.
The main selling feature of this card is the 1watt(1,000 mw) of available transmit power. Out of the box it transmits at about 700mw and as mentioned if using the advanced driver set you may adjust it. I love the 9db gain antenna that comes with it. You should really monitor your position and try your results with the relatively minuscule 5db gain antenna. In some cases you are better off using the 5db! Not only will the 9db pick up more signals but it will also pick up more interference.
I don't like that it has proprietary nonstandard connectors for both the usb and the antenna. I will have to devise a way of attaching other antennas, most likely by finding a vendor that sells this type of cable. Time will tell.
The best feature in my opinion about this card is that it supports both monitor mode and packet injection! This is great for pen testing and war driving. It works out of the box in BackTrak4, so even a novice could use it for such purposes. In my isolated testing I was able to break WEP passwords in 2-4 minutes. Which should show you to use only WPA or better encryption! I've had fun with it so far and have ordered about 4 already. I am sure I will be ordering more in the near future. I still have much to learn regarding what this bad boy is capable of.
If you're in the market for a usb wifi adapter look no further. It's pretty versatile in its application. You could use it for getting better wifi signal in your basement, testing your wireless networks security, or for war driving! Not only that it supports features like WDS(Wireless Distribution Service) which can be pretty useful. You won't be disappointed. Also, its a really small form factor, so you can fit it just about anywhere.
Just an example of what I use it for. I have a linksys wrt54g router running tomato firmware. In our 2nd floor we get wifi signals just fine. On the first floor that is not the case, and we need that computer to have access. So using WDS to both simultaneously receive and transmit a wifi signal (sort of like a repeater) we are all able to connect using the Alfa in WDS mode. My router with tomato firmware also connects to it and is able to transmit the signal to all of the computers connect via Ethernet just as if they were connected to the access point that the Alfa is connected to. I hope that made sense, and that this helped you decide.
