Customer Review: Mixed Summary: 3 Stars
I purchase a lot of used dvds both online and at local stores, and if your like me you've bought your fare share of duds that get to a certain scene and then just stop playing. And if your like me and you purchase used dvds here online you have realized that most of the vendors require you to ship the defective dvd back to them for a refund, well with the cost of shipping and the hassle of making a trip to the post office it seems hardly worth the effort in most cases.
Over time I had built up a stack of non working dvds and decided to see if I couldn't get to finally watch those movies I only got to see half of.
Now this isn't the first dvd repair item I've ever bought, I've tried quite a few over the years. And with that in mind I've pretty much given up all hope of any product being able to successfully repair a dvd that wont play. In fact about half of the dvds in my stack you can see the swirl marks where someone has put them through the "repair" process in the past!
Of the 30 some dvds I used this product on it managed to get 4 to play. And trust me, I put them through multiple times yet even when they would finally come out of the machine looking like a shiny new dvd still nothing. Sometimes they would play a little further than they did before but ultimately they still wouldn't play through.
This is not so much a review against this product as it is a review of the concept of successfully repairing a dvd. I say just cut your losses and toss them out.
To more specifically review this product, it does do a top notch job in its cleaning mode, however the cleaning head requires you to fill a reservoir with "cleaning solution" (aka basic rubbing alcohol) but unless your cleaning dvd's in bulk, the alcohol evaporates away between uses and you'll have to refill it every time. I find a soft cloth and a few drops of alcohol far more sufficient.
Customer Review: Aleratec 240131 cd/ dvd repair Summary: 3 Stars
When i brought this product i was testing today... i remember when i got it just like new ...like like you buy it from seller for used & new. so i just tested today and i'm going to say it works because i read the info in book and even test on my ps3 when you play game and it work but the only i used this cd/dvd rapair machine for my ps1 disc because i know my ps3 plays ps1 & ps2 & ps3 of games when you play them. But i think that if you read info in book it might work but i'm just glad my work because i haerd a few people had problem this machine so i think that the ones that don't work right you would probably have to get a new one but that if it didn't work right.... but when i test my today it i think work so good product
ps. do not put a blu ray disc or hd- dvd because i think it won't work.
Customer Review: Works, for a few disks Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this to repair a stack of about 100 CDs most with significant scratches. I get the best results if I run the scrachted CDs several times in the 'buffing' cycle, which essentially sands a thin layer of plastic from the disk. Then once through the 'repair' process where a layer of protective coating is applied to the disk. This has worked for all the CDs I tried it on (4). The problem is the buffing disks are only good for about 15 cycles. which translates into fixing about 4-6 disks. Then you have to buy the refills at $24. So before buying this kit ask yourself whether your disks are worth $5 each to repair (mine weren't).
The machine also comes with a cleaning kit / solution. In my experience windex / warm water work just a well for dirty CDs. So this does not really add value.
Customer Review: Only fixes minor scratches Summary: 3 Stars
This unit will fix minor scratches on discs. However, you have to run the disc through multiple resurfacing and polishing cycles. Even doing that, it will not repair moderately to deeply scratched discs, and it does not create a like-new, mirror finish. The disc will have swirl marks from the process. Often the disc looks worse than when you started, but I have to admit that it did fix a few discs. I have used it on netflix discs with reasonable success. It just takes a long time. I suppose that I had false expectations when I purchased it (expecting it to make my discs look new). Now that my expectations are set a little lower, I give this unit a solid "eh..." rating.
