I think most of it is my out of date DVD player though. My DVD player doesn't have those fancy new features that figures out what the DVD is really trying to tell it. So...I bought this.
The first DVD I tried to clean, then repair and then buff in that order (trying it after the cleaning cycle and then the repair cycle as described in previous reviews). It doesn't seem to help significantly on the kinds of disks that I have been trying to repair. It does help a little, but it looked like if I went much further the disk would be complete garbage. While I am sure this worked for some, it didn't help much with me. I tried this on many DVDs with similar results. Mega skippage.
Again, I blame my old DVD player and not this device. I did see some improvement, but not enough to make the DVDs enjoyable. I am certain it will help with newer DVD players.
My next step...get a newer DVD player with the skip fixing stuff included.
Your next step...I suggest you try this (it is very cheap for what it does) and if it doesn't help you, get a newer DVD player.

Sometimes I tell myself that this world we live in is well-structed by all the people, put all the politics part aside. If you get sick, there's a doctor, if you get in a car accident, there's insurance, if you have virus in your computer, there's a virus cleaner. And if you have your disc problems, here's a solution.
If you follow the instruction enclosed well, I'm pretty sure you will find your way out. I don't believe all the reviews by the users you have read about this product are from Aleratec, they are real users.
But then, your sickness may not be cured by a doctor alone. You may have to do something else to yourself to get well also. Same here, you may want to use a good grade blank media in order to keep your disc alive.

I ordered this to repair and clean up a 20 CD set, of which 12 of them would not even load to play. They had been scratched when the latches came loose and they bounced around in the cases. I was able to repair about five of them and then the buffers would no longer completely repair the CDs. The additional buffers came in a kit that ran $25+, not cheap. I ended up ordering a cheaper product, that didn't work. As a tip, in desperation, I hand buffed out the CD's with the worn down heads and that did the trick, after working on them for awhile. After hand polishing I buffed then with the repair compound and I now have 20 CDs that load and play great.Customer Review: Don't buy the refills - buy a new machine!

I've had a great deal of success with this machine once I learned the art of using it, so I've just bought my second one. Why would I buy a second one, you ask? Because the new machine, with 4 new spin heads and each of the three types of refill kits cost me about $31 after shipping. Individually, each of the refill kits cost about $17 with shipping, so, rather than pay $51 for refills, I'll save $20 and get another machine free!Customer Review: Aleratec DVD/CD Repair

After much homework, I decided to purchase the Aleratec 240131 disk repair kit. As recommeded in the owners manual, I progressively moved from cleaning, to light repair, to heavy repair. Although the DVD I was attempting to repair did not appear to be very scratched, it would not play on several DVD players. Once the disk was repaired using the heavy repair, I found it to play perfectly. I am very pleased with the Aleratec kit.
