Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Aleratec DVD/CD Disc Repair PlusCustomer Review: Great for my Xbox 360 Summary: 4 Stars
I love playing my Xbox 360, but the model I have likes to make these light circular scratches in my game discs, making it so you can't load certain portions of a game. (By the way, the "standard" response to this is that the scratches come from moving the 360 console while the disc is spinning--I have NEVER once done this--my unit has been in a permanent and stable horizontal position and yet several of my games have received these scratches--my unit is out of warranty though).
When my beloved Bioshock game got scratched and refused to load a specific level, I finally couldn't take it any more. I ordered this product out of desperation to try and get the disc working. I put the game through just one 3 minute repair cycle and popped it back into the 360 to test. To my absolute joy, it loaded up perfectly!!! I do not see the scratches on the disc, they appear to have been perfectly filled by a couple drops of the repair solution and the buffing process. I am so happy to have this thing, it basically means I don't have to buy a new 360 or replace super-expensive games!
The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because the instruction manual is mediocre and irritated me a couple times. But this is a very minor complaint--the unit did what I prayed it would even easier than I thought possible. So happy!
Customer Review: It can work, but it does not work miracles. Summary: 4 Stars
Be realistic. To repair scratches in a DVD or CD you're talking about scraping off a portion of the disc without damaging it further. This is a lot to ask especially for a device selling for under $30.
To me this is a "dancing bear" product. The amazing thing about a dancing bear, goes the old saying, is not how well it dances but that it can dance at all. Similarly the amazing thing about the Aleratec machine is that it can repair any disc at all. Do NOT expect this machine to rescue a severely scratched (gouged) disc. It is probably just not capable of this.
You should definitely try the "a little dish soap and warm water" approach to cleaning a disc before using this machine. I personally think that the cleaning pads and solution that come with this machine are worthless. But the yellow buffering pads and solution *have* worked for me. Not in all cases, but enough times for me to try them before completely giving up on a disc.
It usually takes many, many passes (5-10!), but bit by bit the surface may be polished enough for your player's laser and error correction to eventually extract the data on the disc.
Or it may not. You pays your money and you takes your chances. I'm afraid that's the best recommendation I can make in this case.
Customer Review: Exceeded my expectations Summary: 4 Stars
I had purchased a couple of other repair kits that claimed to be able to fix scratched CD's and DVD's. I was disappointed both times. Then I saw this device. I purchased it based off of the other reviews on Amazon. I wasn't all that confident in the claims until I had to use it.
Little is more frustrating than popping in the Blockbuster rental, getting 90% of the way through the movie, and having the DVD lock up or start to skip, right during the high-action scenes at the end of the movie. This happened to me (again) a couple of days ago. I had not tried the Aleratec device yet, so I decided it was time.
There were no deep gouges visible on the DVD, but there were a few light ones. I followed the instructions for a basic repair, put the DVD back in, and it played flawlessly!
It has also managed to repair a few of my son's console games. He tries to keep them in their cases, but, inevitably, the wind up face down on the carpet or thrown carelessly on a shelf, only to be abused by the curious cats who like to play soccer with them.
There hasn't been a CD or DVD yet that this device hasn't been able to repair. I HIGHLY recommend it. The only downside would be the instructions. They could have been a little more complete.
Customer Review: Better then Others Summary: 4 Stars
I used this repair kit on several discs, of varying damage. The kit made most discs playable after 1 to 3 repairs. The disc with the deepest scratches became 90% playable after 5 repair cycles. The repair and cleaning cycles come at a price however. Each disc will have permanent scoring from the repair/cleaning heads. But, the scoring does not seem to affect playback or readability of the disc. The buffer heads and repair heads are recommended to be replaced after about 20 repair cycles, which requires the purchase of a supplemental parts kit. Overall, the kit does a pretty good job, and worked better then I expected from an electronic repair kit. The process is fairly simple, but can become time consuming if the disc requires several repair cycles. But if you have a cd that is irreplaceable, this kit may help you salvage most or even all of it.
Customer Review: It really works! Summary: 4 Stars
This device works quite well. My husband is pretty hard on our CDs but the Alera actually did completely fix our most chewed up CD, though it did take 4 passes through the buff mode. The kit comes with two sets of repairing heads, and I ordered an extra set thinking most of our CDs would fall into the "repair" category, rather than the "major repair" (buff) category. It turned out that many of our CDs actually needed to go through the buffing procedure. Also, the repair heads are easily cleaned (with water and the brush provided) and re-usable, so in retrospect, I would have ordered an extra set of the buffing heads instead of the repairing heads. The Alera was definitely worth the money--quick and easy to use. (I can't imagine using one of the hand-crank types.) Surf a bit to get a good price with low shipping cost, and you'll be even happier.
