Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Aleratec DVD/CD Disc Repair PlusCustomer Review: Many users don't understand how disc cleaning works Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great product, the only bad reviews it should have is if it is missing accessories or the motor breaks. Anything but that, I have a few things to clarify here.
1) This product, like many others, will only repair light scratches. If the scratch goes on deeper than the polycarbonate layer on the disc or is on the top side of the disk (aka If light can shine through it), then it's pretty much FUBAR and you would have to throw it away because the data is permanently corrupted. Always remember to put your discs back into their cases. That's what cases were designed for.
2) Use the yellow pad for tiny scratches and the pink pad for the much bigger ones and don't forget to always use the blue buffer pad afterwards. People will just run their disc through once and expect it working like magic. Nothing's that easy. Also, don't forget to wipe any dust or dirt off of the disc before you put it in the machine. The particles will be rubbed against the outer protective layer, making it worse.
3) People who've posted reviews have complained about their discs having more scratches, in a round radial pattern. This is what it is supposed to do! The radial pattern scratch helps the laser bypass the previous scratches on the disc itself and does not affect the disc at all. If you don't believe me, google up a website on CD Technology and read for yourself.
4) This doesn't technically remove the scratches 100%, it just makes them readable. It's not guaranteed to completely remove every scratch but it will still play. If you're that obsessive-compulsive and want every scratch off of it, then go and fork out $500 for an industrial CD buffer and then go seek therapy.
I've used this product many times (The correct way) and it has always worked for me for my DVDs and Xbox 360 games except a couple of gouged discs that were a result of a major accident. I advise against using it for microdiscs or Gamecube games.
Customer Review: Fix your discs; don't ditch them! Summary: 5 Stars
After a hard drive going bad scratched up several discs, I had two options...toss the old discs and buy new ones or invest in a disc repair kit. I started researching repair kits and was less than impressed with the plastic hand-held type that seemed most popular. Someone else had recommended this product, so I took a look.
Since there were no reviews at the time on Amazon, I did a more extensive look around the web for reviews of this product from Alera. I really never found any, but I was impressed with the fact that for about the same price as a competitor's hand-held unit, this one came with several different kits (cleaning, repair, etc.) and was fully automatic. So, I decided to buy it.
Wow, am I impressed! Within ten minutes of getting it home, I had it up and running and repairing a disc. Three minutes later, the damaged disc was playing again with no problems. I've repaired five discs so far and have cleaned about ten. The cleaning and repair kits are easy to use, though I'd recommend reading through ALL the instruction manual before beginning, as the simplest process (cleaning) is listed last in the manual.
This kit can repair CD, DVD and video game discs. Since the unit is fully automatic, all you do is screw in the repair wheels, add three drops of repair goop to one of the wheels, put your damaged disc in, close the lid and press the button that says "repair". Three minutes later, your disc should be fixed. Of course, this kit is not going to repair deep cracks or magically replace missing chunks of data, but for surface scratches that are causing your disc readers to come up with errors or producing glitches on your DVD player, this kit is wonderful. The cost of the item is more than made up in being able to save your collection of more expensive games, CDs or DVDs!
Customer Review: Excellent Product, but don't expect a miracle. Summary: 5 Stars
I am very please with this product. I use EAC to rip my CD's and this has been very helpful when ripping my older CD's. I have another hand cranked CD polisher which work or, but this one is nice as it's mechanical. It comes with and AC adapter and it sounds like a medium volume kitchen tool.
It can fix many minor cd issues. It's is based on 3 level of fixing.
Cleaning (blue) - removing sneeze marks, spit, finger oil, etc.
Polishing (white pads), is for a bit more scrubbing action, it seems to be pretty good at removing deeper dirt which might cause playback issues.
Soft sanding (pink pads) - This is the solution for "major damage". The soft sanding removed high spots and a little bit of your cd's plastic making some minor scratches stop having errors. Major damage is all relative, so don't expect it to fix deep scratch.
Miracles: While this repair tool works great and I really love it, don't expect too much. For more consumers it's perfect. If you have crazy deep scratches then you still might need to try alternative methods like clear nail polish or other stuff.
Over all I am very please. I would say I have fixed about 95% of my CD's. The ones from high school or before (10 year ago) tend to have some meaner scratches. Those are hit and miss depending the amount of abuse.
Customer Review: Oh My, My!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
My 2 and 3 years old daughters got to the DVDs, not good. Scratches galore to say the least. I purchased it because after researching DVD repair on the Internet, it seemed my best bet. This morning, I took the ugliest, scratched up DVD that I could find and followed the instructions for disc repair. I could still see a little bit of scratches left, so I followed the instructions for buffing first followed by disc repair. If you look in the light, then you can see swirl marks from the repair. BUT, the disc plays beautifully. We have a Sony disc player that I joke is too stuck-up to play discs unless they are pristine. We have had to clean discs that were brand new so they would play. The disc played without a hitch. I am so in love with this machine that I would buy two if I was an octopus and could fix more of the discs at the same time. Okay, maybe I am just joking about needing two.
The machine is simple to run. You do not need to be a rocket scientist. Just read the little bit of instructions that it takes to run the unit and let the unit do the work. I feared that I would spend the money and then have to replace the DVDs anyways. Save your $$$, do not buy new DVDs and get this instead.
Customer Review: The ability to repair beyond compare Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this product because we use one of the popular DVD by mail programs and we're fond of old or older movies. Although you wouldn't think the DVD store would send you scratched or unplayable DVDs, it happens. The Aleratec has 3 capabilities - clean, repair, and buff, which requires only that you change the "heads" in the machine (and that's extremely simple). If you've got a fingerprint-covered DVD or CD, 3 minutes after the clean cycle the disc is polished to perfection. If you have a DVD or CD with some minor skips/scratches, the repair cycle will fix those in 3 minutes as well. If you get a really badly scratched (or even uplayable) DVD or CD, it needs buffing. This requires two 3 minute cycles, a buffer cycle, followed by a repair cycle. I've repaired 17 discs that skipped or were unplayable and to date haven't had any failures, although I'm sure there's a disc out there so far gone the Alertatec might not be able to fix it... In short, I'm very pleased with this purchase.
