I've had this phone for probably 5 years...maybe more. I use it in my home office and am on the phone most of the day. I need a new phone now as the flash and the LCD stopped working.
The answering machine was great, but since I use it in my home office, I opted for the phone company's voice mail and stopped using the answering machine component. Nor do I use the speed dial. The hold and the mute still work. The speakerphone is excellent and takes just the press of the button. I never had any problems with sticking buttons like some of the other reviews have mentioned about some AT & T models.
Ringer control volume has worked fine - and still does. It goes very loud and very soft. Theonly issue i have is not really with the phone - I have to stand up to see who's calling (when the LCD worked that is) and I'm digging the Uniden tilt LCD that's backlit. But it has no flash and I use that button constantly.
This was a hearty phone that was used hard and had a long life.

Having read the reviews,I decided to try this phone. Am Glad I did.It sets by my computer where I wanted a hands free phone.This SPEAKER on this phone is the best ever!! I can walk over to my door and the caller can still hear me. I've even been ask to turn it down by the caller!!! The answering machine is great,too.The mute button serves as a hold button for me. It is a challenge to set up some of the features if you are not technology minded(I AM NOT). SO I started at the beginning and set up the basics(WILL DO REST LATER).It could use a better DISPLAY,lit up,however the price is too good to complain. Other phones we bought through the phone Co. cost over $100,and none of them works as good as this one.SPEAKER clarity and adjustable volume are the best,along withe one button to push to play your messages. because of the great price for a mutiple task machine. The voice mail feature I previously had from SBC/AT&T interferred with the automatic answer on my fax machine, and having to put my fax machine in manual mode in order to receive faxes was very inconvenient when away from home. Now with my new AT & T 1855 I have all the conveniences of voice mail (at a better price) without the hassle of having to be notified (via e-mail or phone) ahead of time of receipt of a fax and then having to be right there in order to receive it. In the initial set-up of the HP ALL-In-One fax machine I own, the manual states that if you have voice-mail rather than an answer machine, the fax machine must be placed in manual mode because it will not receive faxes automatically.Customer Review: works great for grandparents

I bought this phone for my grandparents after looking at many others on Amazon. This got the best reviews, and the rating was well deserved. It has been easy for my grandparents to use. The caller ID and answering machine have been intuitive. The speaker phone works from across the kitchen. They like the size of the buttons and say that the display is easy enough to read. It was wall-mountable, like they wanted. We were worried because one comment said that it was difficult to hold between your chin and your shoulder, but my grandma has been doing it without any trouble. Absolutely no problems. I actually needed only a wall phone for the kitchen than also had caller ID. This unit has an answering system as well, so I got rid of my 20-year old answering machine to boot. Having a speakerphone system is perfect for handsfree duties in the kitchen and the volume control goes pretty high. The instruction book is well written and easy to follow - I had to refer to it once to determine how to call in remotely to pick up my messages. It's very easy to change set paramters such as the outgoing message or number of rings as well. Good buy.
