Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Actiontec GT701D Ethernet DSL Modem with Routing CapabilitiesCustomer Review: Dual WAN Router Summary: 5 Stars
I rarely write reviews, but this is one of the few times a product did exactly what it said it would do right out of the box. I have an unusual setup, so the following is for those potential buyers using a dual WAN router.
I have an RV082 dual WAN router, which means I was not simply connecting the modem to a switch, or to a computer, but to a router that uses two ISP (Internet) connections. In my case, RoadRunner and Frontier (Verizon) DSL.
This is a special setup. Do not read what most bulletin boards say to do with this product as they are wrong. Let the Actiontec modem act as a 'dummy terminal' simply sending the signal directly to your router, especially if it is an RV082.
To do this connect your laptop/pc directly to the modem with the CAT5 cable they provide, open a browser and type http://192.168.0.1/ if it asks for a username and password, use: admin / password.
Depending upon the screen you see click either 'manual setup' or if at the settings menus, choose 'advanced setup,' then 'WAN IP address on the left."
When here you will see a series of button menus, choose "RFC1483 Transparent Bridging" then scroll to the bottom and hit apply.
What you are doing here is telling your GT701D actiontec modem, that you want it to simply pass the internet connection directly through it to your router. This means that now you have to tell your router what to do in order to connect to the internet.
In the case of an RV082 from the top menu choose "SETUP" and then under either WAN1 (the right one) or WAN2 (the left one) choose the type of DSL you are using. In the case of Frontier / Verizon you choose "PPPoE." Once this is selected enter the username and password you were given by your provider, then choose "keep alive" instead of "connect on demand." Also directly above you will see two radio buttons "DMZ" and "Dual WAN." Here you select DUAL WAN since you want to use both of your redundant ISP connections.
Next you must tell your RV082 / dual WAN router how you want to bounce between your redundant / dual internet connections. The best choice most often is to go under (RV082) "System Management" and choose the second button "Load Balancing."
Now that this is complete, you need to actually connect to your DSL line. To do this, choose (on the RV082) choose "System Summary" at the top, and about halfway down the page (you may need to scroll) you will see under either WAN1 or WAN2 two buttons that say 'connect' and 'disconnect.' Here, choose "connect," what this is doing is sending your username and password from the router to the ISP allowing you to connect. Since you have 'keepalive' selected from above, once it is connected you will not have to worry about doing this again for awhile. After a few seconds you will see an IP address pop up showing you that your connection was successful. If it fails, double-check your username and password for typos.
After that you are good to go! I was very impressed with the setup of this product in my unique circumstances, and highly advise it for anyone in a similar situation to mine.
Cheers!
