Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of AT&T E5917 - 5.8 GHz Exxpandable Cordless Answering System with Dial-In-Base SpeakerphoneCustomer Review: Better Than 6.0 Ghz: Solid, Clear Sound, Decent Range Summary: 5 Stars
Naturally, opinions are like noses, everyone has one, and everyone's electromagnetic environments are different. However, I spent a lot of time researching (I've been on the Net from back when Google was still a Stanford University project, so no newbie).
I had a Uniden 5.8 that I had for years dying out, so I figured I'd upgrade to 6.0. I finally went to my local Fry's and got a slick new 6.0 Panasonic with color LED display and bells and whistles.
Panasonic usually make pretty good electronics and I actually use one of their headsets for cordless phones, but in this case, the phone was a real disappointment --- particularly in sound quality and range. So I returned it, and decided to stick with 5.8 and finally settled on the AT&T E5917 at Circuit City right before they closed.
The E5917 us not as sexy looking as the new 6.0 Panasonics or others, but it's like the older HP printers: solidly built, a work horse with good, clear sound and decent range. No slew of cutsey to irritating ring-tones or other un-essentials.
Soft keypads light up green when dialing and for about 5-10 seconds after one shuts of the phone; it even has a second in-headset speaker phone in addition to the one on the base.
Answering machine probably also isn't as full of nifty little stuff as newer ones either, but there again, it gets the job done. In a pitch dark room, both the messages display and the "machine" on button's red are easy to see, too.
--- Bottom line: The E5917 may have come out a 3 or so years ago as of this review, but it's a solid quality product at a very reasonable price (just don't buy it from AT&T directly, too pricey there). I'm going to buy one for a friend of mine too. And hey, it isn't really that bad looking either :)
