The reason why there is alot of noise is because you didn't use a DSL filter. I had the same problem then remembered i didnt' hook up a DSL filter to it. I just tried it and it works great now. I gave it 4 stars because i haven't used it for very long. But so far so good. My old AT&T answering machine stopped working, so I purchased this one to replace it. I can't give it five stars because there is some static when listening and it is hard to adjust the volume to cut out the static to hear clearly. The machine is easy to use and it sounds great, I didn't even need to read the instructions to set it up. We changed from a tape answering machine with many features to this digital system. Even at this low price, the AT&T 1738 has almost all the features of our previous one, in a much smaller size. We recommend this machine and will actually be purchasing a second unit.Customer Review: Good unit

We bought this as we wern't able to find a 2-line telephone with a decent answering machine.
This works just fine. Replay audio is fine and the unit offers many program and playback options.
A good unit that we'd purchase again.
