Customer Review: A Great Answering Machine at a Great Price
Summary: 5 Stars

After using a phone with a built in answer machine for several years, I recently purchased a separate phone and the 1738 answering system which digitally records up to 40 minutes of calls. I paid $18.00 for this unit; a great price.

The human engineering on the 1738 is excellent. For example, to set the day of the week you repeatedly press a button until the correct day of the week is announced. Other set up steps are similar.

I like the remote access with toll saver to retrieve calls when traveling. You can select your own three digit remote access code.

They have a feature on this unit that is a first for me. That is the system can be set up to start the message with the phone number of the caller using Caller ID Announce.

The voice quality of a digital message is always an issue. I believe the voice quality of this machine is quite acceptable, admittedly it is not like Carnegie Hall. Manufacturers have to trade off voice quality against memory cost. In this case, I think AT&T did an excellent job. Messages recorded are clear and the outgoing message sounds like me.

It turns off and on and plays messages with a push of a button; the way I like machines to operate.

Other Features of Interest:

Like all digital memories, you can selectively delete calls.

A light blinks when you have messages and the number of messages is displayed.

If you elect to save messages, it tells you how many minutes of recording time are left.

The system has a half speed feature that allows you to press and hold a key to hear a message at half the normal speed. I think this will be nice when you want to write as you listen to the message. The down side is that when played at half speed, it sounds like a drunk is talking. Unfortunately, this feature cannot be used remotely.

Features I don't use but are available:

There is a feature that can be turned on to intercept calls where the phone number of the caller is purposely being blocked. This can intercept nuisance or threatening calls. With this feature on, it will play the message "We're sorry blocked calls to this number cannot be accepted"; then the system hangs up without recording a message. I tested this feature and blocked calls are stopped. It allows unidentified calls to go through (examples: calls from overseas and calls where people use calling cards).

It has a call screening feature.

Customer Review: excellent answering machine
Summary: 5 Stars

The AT&T 1738 answering machine gives you a lot for your money! I have had this a while now and I don't regret my purchase. Yes, sometimes the message (both outgoing and incoming) playback sounds slightly too slow or too fast; but the playback is still clear and the messages people leave you are perfectly understandable.

This machine attaches easily to your phone and the electrical outlet. The feature setup requires your attention; but if you do it right (which takes about ten minutes--fifteen tops) you'll be glad you did. This answering machine lets you choose voice prompts in either English or Spanish; and you can choose an easy to remember remote access code so you can pick up your messages without being home. The clock is easy to set up and the time date stamp is useful for time sensitive messages. You can also choose whether or not to have the system pick up blocked phone calls. There's much more, too. Great!

The machine also takes up very little space (maybe 6 inches by 4 or 5 inches tops); and the digital features means that there's no small cassette tape to replace ever.

Personally I've never had a problem with this telephone answering machine. The worst that ever happened to me is that after a power outage I had to reset the clock. It takes five minutes with the easy to understand directions booklet that comes with this machine. The booklet also gives you a website to go to if you have any questions. I searched through the booklet but I could not find a phone number for customer service.

Overall, I highly recommend this answering machine. With 40 minutes of digital messaging capacity you really can't go wrong; and AT&T is still a very good brand for this type of answering machine.

Customer Review: Easy to setup, Easy to use Answering Machine
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had the previous AT&T version for 4 years and it has worked great. So when I needed to get a new one as a gift for a relative it was a no brainer. Yes you need to use the DSL line filters that come with your DSL service, but they already had one, so it was just click it in. I of course read the instructions, however after I set it up, the in house teenager walked up to it, re-recorded the message, played back the new messages, deleted the useless ones and walked away... It was that obvious to the electronic kids these days. For me, I just wanted to be clear about resetting the clock. Same procedure as my previous one, with the ability to go forward or backward with the time, which is handy for setting the minutes.

If you have caller ID you can use it to block anonymous callers, it can log the phone number of callers along with the time they called.

What I like most is that the LED number says how many messages you have, the flashing red led is how many new unheard messages. And when you hit play, it plays the new messages first. No need to go back through the reminder to go to the dentist messages.

Has a 1 year guarantee, but you need "original packaging" so remember the box and the shipping receipt from Amazon is your guarantee, toss one inside the other and put it in the attic. But if this one works as well as my previous one, you won't need it.

Customer Review: Finally, a decent answering machine!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have purchased this machine because I wanted one that was quality built, easy to use, and decent to look at. I have used this for more than 6 months and find it a great little answering machine.

The trickiest set-up is the CLOCK. Be patient, experiment a little, keep trying, you will eventually get it. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes not.

Complete easy-to-read manual instructions
The manual unfolds to large size, the print is clear and better yet, the instructions are well-written. The page folds include everything you may need to know, including if you are having difficulties. A separate manual exists for each of the two languges, English and Spanish. To further aid, there is a picture of the front of the answering machine and provides clear explanation of each of the buttons.

Answering machine - nice and compact
Another great feature of this machine is that is attractive without being bulky or cumbersome.

Check your messages away from home
One of the better features is that you can dial from a touch-tone phone into your voice messages, and with a small cheat sheet, pressing the numbers for playing all, reviewing, deleting, playing new messages only. Repeat, help, announcements, etc. etc.

Customer Review: Very Good Low Cost Answering Machine
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been using this machine (AT&T 1738) since late January with excellent results. I have had more expensive systems with call and message forwarding, multiple "Mailboxes" etc and every time the power "Hicuped," you had to go in and redo the messages then make sure the system was in the proper Mode to receive calls. The problem was, there was no indicator that the system had lost power. Learned that if it went several days with no messages, check the machine.

This little machine only needs the time reset if it looses power and even if it looses power, when the power comes back it picks right up, answering the phone and taking messages. The call display also flashes so you know when power has been lost.

It also has one nice feature that cuts down on telemarketing calls. If you have Caller ID and someone calls who has blocked their number, you can set the answering machine to play a message stating Blocked calls are not accepted and hang up.

All in all, a nice little machine for the money.
