I live in rural East Tennessee where we have many brown outs and power surges. I have had another unit that has protected my desktop computer for years. After several power issues, I bought one for my Samsung LCD tv and Directv receiver. It is the best decision I have made. Electronics are so sensitive it doesn't make sense to spend $1500 or more on a TV and not spend $60 to protect it.
Do yourself and favor and get one. It is cheap insurance against the destruction of your sensitive electronics.

We have iffy power that seems to flicker for no real reason. We have used UPS on our computers, but with the Tivo, we found that the power would be off for a moment, and the Tivo would re-boot, taking 5-10 minutes. If this was at a time when it was not active, there was no problem, but during a show that was being recorded, we would lose quite a chunk of program.
The UPS has solved this dilemma. I did have to install the software on a computer attached to the unit in order to turn off the alarm.

I have used older versions of APC back-ups before. This is the easiest one I have ever used. It sets up and configures itself in a matter of minutes thru the USB port with Windows Vista. By adding the software, you can have it safely shut down the computer after a specified amount of time on battery power, as well as monitor your system. All in all, even I could set it up in only a matter of minutes and you can't beat this brand for reliability. A BARGAIN !!! Very cheap file crash insurance.Customer Review: Good Basic UPS

Great product. We use these at the company I work for. They are great in the case of a "flicker" in power, no lost data. Or in the case of a longer outage, this gives you approx. 3-5 minutes to save what you are working on and shut down your computer. In my eyes, 4 receptacles on battery is plenty. All you really need is monitor and tower, all other peripherals can be plugged into surge protector. I would absolutely recommend this unit and we plan to purchase more in the future.Customer Review: Great UPS battery back up

First, I don't use the software shut down features. I only buy these to keep my office computers from shutting off due to intermittent power outage due to storms, road crews, etc... With this in mind, they work great. They are small enough to fit in and around a desk. They have plenty of battery backed up plugs and non-battery plugs to replace extension cords and other power outlets. You can also find replacement batteries if you are comfortable doing that yourself.
