This unit was shipped very fast from the vendor and arrived at my door step in 5 days after I placed the order.
I connected the battery and it was ready to be used. After two hours charging, I unplugged the power from the outlet and all electronics continue to operate without any problem.
I used UPS to protect my networked HDD and a DSL router. I did not use the USB connection between the distance between my router and my laptop.
My only issue is that I don't know how to project the time this UPS would last at this power load during the outage. Like other reviewer had suggested, a indicator at 5% power or a display would have been nice.

I bought the APC Back-UPS ES 8 Outlet 550VA 120V unit for my home office shortly after losing unsaved work due to a power outage in my neighborhood.
Installation of the provided software was easy, and I find the software to be useful in terms of monitoring status during power outages.
The setup was straight forward, requiring only that the wire from the provided battery to be attached to the rest of the unit.
Since my initial purchase I have lost power twice without losing any data due the the power back up.
I recommend this unit to anybody who works from a small home office, or frequently uses a computer at home.

We have great fluctuations in our power due to the length of underground run. Turning on the Dryer, Disposal, or making coffee in the morning with two machines and the microwave would cause the DSL to go out, and sometimes shut down the computer. I bought the APC device and that problem no longer occurs. We hear frequent clicks from it as it does the job, it is surprising how often it kicks in, like, everytime the refrigerator turns on.
But, no more DSL or computer shut offs, A great device, when you toss in that incase of a power outage you don't lose the computer and the data you were working with, it is darn cheap insurance.

This UPS is awesome. Very easy to setup. Works Great with iMac 27 in i7 quad core. The software CD that comes with the UPS isn't needed since the OS handles UPS management seamlessly in Energy Saver. Just hook up the UPS to the iMac via the USB cable and put in your settings and you are up and running. I found 8 plugs to be plenty. Just keep in mind that only 4 are backed up by battery the other four are surge protected but not on battery backup. This really makes sense when you think about how fast the battery would drain if you had 8 devices plugged into it on battery power. I have no issues with this one at all. Thanks to this unit, the lights went out and my computer didn't even twitch. Thus I'm writing this review rather than cursing a blue streak about having to open all my applications again and re-do a bunch of work. I realize that one anecdote doesn't mean this is bulletproof, but it's 1 for 1 so far.
Updating 2/14/2011. This thing continues to be some of the best money I've ever spent. I've had at least a half dozen instances in the last few months where the lights flicker or go out while my computer keeps humming along without ever knowing there was a problem.
