Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of APC BE550G Back-UPS ES 8 Outlet 550VA 120VCustomer Review: Great Unit Summary: 5 Stars
I've used various models of APC Back-UPS for years, and they have all given great service. I noticed many reviewers complain of the short battery hook-up wires. I can only say, grin and bear it. Over the past eight years I've bought APC uninterrupted power supply units varying from hundreds of dollars to around fifty dollars in cost, and they all have those short hook-up wires. I can only assume APC has a reason for making them so short; they must be aware by now that their length makes connecting them to the battery difficult. As far as I'm concerned, it's a small problem considering the service received. All the units I bought operated without a problem.
One other thing I might mention: after a power outage, I've used the larger, RS 800 model to power a table lamp for hours after shutting down my computer and peripherals. Strategically placed, the lamp provides enough illumination to navigate around three rooms without using a flashlight.
Customer Review: Perfect Summary: 5 Stars
I have two of these protecting my A/V equipment (TV, stereo, TiVo, etc.) and they work like a charm. In fact, in the month I've owned them they have already been called to duty three times. The first was during a storm, where the power flickered on and off rapidly for a few seconds. Normally that would have caused my TiVo to have a seizure and give up for 30 minutes, but in this case it and my television just powered on through.
The other two involved me tripping my rather sensitive circuit breaker while vacuuming -- again, the devices didn't even blink.
If you have a TiVo, or a nice expensive LCD, I highly recommend getting SOME sort of battery backup. For smaller devices, it will give you enough battery to get through 90% of power outages. For larger devices, you won't get much protection, but it at least smooths out power "blips" and brownouts. I consider it very inexpensive protection for a lot of expensive goodies.
Customer Review: Easy Install, Good Software Summary: 5 Stars
The kid at the computer shop recommended a UPS system for me after the expensive, high-end power supply burned out on the homemade computer, and apparently caused some other difficulties along the way to failure. We installed a new power supply and I added the UPS system at the same time.
The device is easy to set up, and I was satisfied that the pigtail was ample to reach the wall socket.
The software installed readily, and provides enough information to tell you what the voltage is in your building (121-122 volts in my apartment), and whether or not there has been any AC interruptions during computer use. There's more than enough sockets available and adequate spacing between the sockets.
The thing is very unobtrusive in use, and in the absence of a catastrophe or near-cat, it's hard to say how well it performs under duress, but so far it seems to be OK. Ralph L. Seifer, Long Beach, California.
Customer Review: It works.. what else to say? Summary: 5 Stars
Got it after the n-th power discontinuity in my house.
Once in a while I get an outage of less than a second. Very annoying. Sometimes is so short the computer keep working (internal capacitors are enough), but sometimes my machine reboot right in the middle of my work.
So, two choices:
1) complain with the electric company.
2) buy a UPS unit and don't think anymore.
After trying #1, I decided for the UPS. Since I don't need it to keep my server running for long time, and/or have automatic shutdown feature, I only needed a small one (probably a power surge and power rectifier unit would have worked as well)... this is cheaper, and does the job.
Since I got it I noticed a couple of times a power issue again, the UPS worked like a charm, kicked in, and my computer had no problem at all.
Customer Review: Happiness is a good UPS Summary: 5 Stars
Recently we purchased a new APC ES 8 outlet 550VA back-up UPS for our home office computer. This is the second similar sized APC unit we have purchased. The first has provided over 4 years of flawless service to us here in North Carolina where storm power outages and surges are frequent. While neighbors complain of damage to their electronic equipment, we have had no problems, no damage and no lost data. Just the reasons you need a UPS. The only "disappointment" in the whole process was that buying a new (and updated) unit from Amazon was the same price as purchasing just a replacement battery from APC. So we are using the old one as just a heavy duty surge protector elsewhere in the house. Highly recommend this product. Software installs easily and has worked without error in our Windows XP system.
