Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of APC BACK-UPS RS BR1500LCD 1500VA/865W UPS SystemCustomer Review: Rock-solid, set it & forget about it! Summary: 5 Stars
I have always liked APC products ... I had another backUps that was starting to die (after 12-years and a couple of battery changes).
I got tired of that and decided it was time to buy another one. I paid $198.23 ... HEY, how 'come it's cheaper now!!
Anyway, the LCD red backlit display is very informative ... you don't really need that info. (but it looks cool). I searched reviews high-and-low (& prices, too). APC/Amazon had the answer. Free shipping on such a heavy beast is a great deal!
If you want peace of mind for gear protection ... this unit does the job well. I have a lot of money invested in a music studio and it is well worth the money for the protection that these items bring to the table. I experience quite a few power outages and power bumps in our area, and it (in my opinion) is absolutley a necessity to have my equipment protected by a UPS system.
I know it isn't very fun to buy things like this ... it just sits under the table ... you can't play with it, but it WILL protect you from the evil electrons that may enter and leave your house without warning.
If you care about your investment (computers, TVs, stereos, entertainment systems, etc.) get one before you regret it!

Customer Review: Great unit Summary: 5 Stars
Seems to be a pretty solid unit. It has logged 26 "events" in the few weeks since I've had it. I'm not sure all of these were significant enough to interrupt my PC operation, but some of them were.
I think I overbought. I have a MacPro with 3 external hard drives, a Neat Receipts scanner, and two MFC devices hooked up (one laser, one inkjet). It only requires 22% of the power (with both printers in energy saver mode). The software to shutdown is Mac OS X 10.5.5 compatible and seems to work o.k. I haven't pulled the power and waited to see if it would power off the machine in an orderly way, but I assume it works. I will test it some time.
The unit says 24 minutes of run time available if I lost power. Given I'm only using 22% of capacity, this is disappointing; however, practically speaking, this is fine. I mainly wanted to avoid damage, and avoid going down for those constant "blips" that make me reset a bunch of clocks in the house when the power loss lasts only a few seconds or less. And practically speaking, I just want time for an orderly shutdown if I am going to lose power for more than a few minutes.
I might buy a smaller unit if I had to do it over again, but I have no complaints about this unit.
Customer Review: APC: Best of the Best Summary: 5 Stars
I'm running a Dell desktop box (Inspiron 530) with a 22" Dell flatscreen, an external drive, scanner and the wall-wart for my cell phone through this unit.
The total draw for these items is 103 watts and it says I have 44 minutes of reserve time (awesome). You can view everything that's going on with the UPS on the unit's display or with the software (APC PowerChute Personal Edition) on your computer's monitor.
I think for a desktop PC these UPS devices are mandatory. I ran an old APC model with half the capacity of this new model until its battery finally died. Wile the battery replacement process through APC is easy and economical, I wanted a step up in the amount of time the unit would power my desktop system on battery alone.
I tried using APC's website for trading up and the model selection seems shorter than normal and many of the models were out of stock. I found exactly what I wanted at Amazon with better pricing and free shipping and the APC name; that's about as good as it gets.
I did experience one hiccup with the first unit being damaged upon arrival (physical damage) and Amazon promptly sent its replacement.
Couldn't be happier...
Customer Review: APC BR1500LCD UPS: works great with mac pro and more Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using this unit for about two months and have had one area wide power outage and also one tripped circuit breaker due to air conditioning in my old building. The unit worked exactly as expected! With out installing any software (the mac OS X recognizes the UPS as soon as you connect the USB cable) the computer was able to shut down automatically when needed, and recognized the APC was providing power. I had time to properly save my sessions and shut them down. I replaced a nice Tripp Lite 1000VA UPS system because I needed more power and I read the reviews on this one which were overall very positive. With the mac pro and a 20" LCD cinema display, I am also running a Pro Tools 003 Rack, a Mackie 1604 mixer, a modem, router, and external hard drive on the APC unit and it handles them all with room to spare. It also conditions the power going to these sensitive components. The LCD screen provides important information and is very easy to read. I highly recommend the APC BR1500LCD for those looking to protect a similar home studio set up.
Customer Review: Very Solid Unit Summary: 5 Stars
Very good unit. The BR1500LCD and the BX1500LCD are identical in every way. The differing model numbers are merely a way for APC to distinguish distribution outlets. Neither the BR1500LCD, listed here, nor the BX1500LCD has the TRIM feature, although they both do have the BOOST feature. Again, both models are identical in every respect.
This is a lot of unit! Potential purchasers may wish to consider if they need this much UPS. I have a Pentium quad core running 4 large hard drives with an Nvidea 8600 GTS card, a 750 watt power supply and a 22 inch LCD monitor connected. My router is also attached as is my back up hard drive. In all, the unit shows I'm pulling a little over 200 watts at computer idle; a much lower draw than I anticipated.
Obviously I have a lot of room to add if necessary, and at idle loads I have about 20 minutes of back up time, but you should consider what your power needs are. Although this unit has a relatively compact physical footprint, it is a powerful unit with a quality build.
